Steps to Take If You or a Loved One Suspect Elder Abuse

Ensure Immediate Safety
Remove the person from harm's way: If the abuse is happening at the moment and you can do so safely, remove the elder from the abusive environment.
Call 911: For immediate danger or if a crime is in progress, contact emergency services.

Document Evidence
Take notes: Write down details of the abuse, including dates, times, and descriptions of incidents.
Photograph injuries: If there are physical injuries, take photos to document them.
Save correspondence: Keep abusive emails, texts, or letters as evidence.

Report the Abuse
Contact local authorities: Report the abuse to the Local Police Department.
Notify Adult Protective Services (APS): Call your local APS hotline to report the abuse.
Inform community administrators: If the elder lives in a senior community, report the abuse to the facility’s management.
